Sometimes it’s the little things that tell the biggest story.

Yesterday (July 21st of 2026) I was browsing through the official Juniper certification pages (https://learningportal.juniper.net/juniper/user_activity_info.aspx?id=5357) and I noticed something that genuinely made me smile – smile BIG TIME:

An Expert-level certification dedicated to Mist AI. Not an incremental update but a completely new expert certification for one of the fastest-growing networking platforms in the industry. As someone who has spent years working with Juniper, earned multiple JNCIE certifications, and watched the incredible evolution of Mist from an AI-driven WLAN platform into a complete networking ecosystem, this feels like a milestone.

More than just another certification

Creating an expert-level certification is not a small investment. It means developing a complete blueprint, creating training material, designing practical scenarios, validating exam objectives, and committing to supporting the technology for years to come. Companies simply don’t make that kind of investment if they are planning to put a product into maintenance mode. Quite the opposite. A brand-new JNCIE-MistAI is a very public statement that Mist isn’t just part of HPEs future – it is a cornerstone of it.

Let’s be honest. When the acquisition was announced, competitors immediately started telling all of my customers (I’m sure you have experienced a similar story) the usual fear-story of an apocalyptic future and a network in pieces:

• “Juniper will completely disappear.”
• “Mist will lose importance.”
• “The Juniper certifications won’t matter anymore.”
• “You should migrate before it’s too late.”

Fear has always been an easy sales strategy. But reality tends to be much less dramatic. Since the acquisition announcement we’ve continued to see product development, software releases, certification updates, and now even entirely new certification paths. A brand-new Expert certification isn’t something you launch when you’re planning to sunset a platform. Quite the opposite. Developing a JNCIE exam requires a tremendous investment: Defining the blueprint, building the lab, creating exam objectives, and committing to supporting that certification for years to come. You simply don’t make that kind of investment unless you truly believe in the future of the technology. That’s why I think the announcement of the JNCIE-MistAI sends such a strong message. It clearly shows that Mist isn’t standing still – it’s continuing to evolve and remains a strategic part of Juniper’s portfolio.

I’ve often heard people say that certifications are “just badges” with no real value (also soming mostly from folks who failed to get even the simplest certification). If you’ve been following me for a while, you’ll know I couldn’t disagree more. Good certifications aren’t about collecting logos for your LinkedIn profile. They create structured learning paths, encourage engineers to broaden their knowledge, and build communities around technologies. They give people a goal to work towards – and in the process, they make all of us better engineers. It’s not Cert or knowledge – one can’t survive without the other. The Certification is just a framework and an official knowledge validation – nothing more but also nothing less!

Looking at the complete Mist AI certification track (from Associate, to Specialist, to Professional, and now finally Expert) it’s obvious how far the platform has come. Mist is no longer “just” an AI-powered Wi-Fi solution. Today it covers wireless, campus switching, SD-WAN, AI Operations, automation, cloud management, network assurance, access control, and much more.

And honestly? Looking at the breadth of topics alone, I wouldn’t be surprised if the JNCIE-MistAI eventually overtakes the JNCIE-ENT as the JNCIE requiring the broadest technical knowledge. The platform spans an incredible range of technologies, which is both exciting and intimidating at the same time. Becoming a JNCIE-MistAI will probably require candidates to demonstrate not only deep expertise, but also an exceptionally broad understanding across multiple networking disciplines. That certainly won’t make it an easy certification to earn – but that’s exactly what will make it so valuable. An Expert certification should represent someone who understands how all these technologies work together, not just someone who has mastered a single product. If that’s what the JNCIE-MistAI aims to achieve, I think it’s going to become one of the most respected certifications in modern enterprise networking.

That’s exciting. Very exciting. I’m genuinely happy to see this. I’ve always believed that Mist changed how enterprise networking is operated. The platform isn’t simply “wireless management” anymore. It’s an AI-driven operational platform that keeps expanding into switching, WAN, NAC, location services, automation, and user experience. Seeing an expert certification appear feels like recognition that this ecosystem has reached a level where true specialists deserve their own pinnacle certification.

The networking industry is changing rapidly. AI is becoming part of everyday operations. Cloud-managed infrastructure is becoming the norm. Jobs and job descriptions change rapidly. Network Engineers Evolve. And vendors continue to evolve. The announcement of JNCIE-MistAI sends a clear message: Innovation hasn’t stopped. Investment hasn’t stopped. And despite all the speculation we’ve heard over the past months, the technology, the certification program, and the ecosystem continue to move forward.

Sometimes actions speak louder than marketing. For me, JNCIE-MistAI is one of those actions.
